If you haven’t heard the news, the Pine Hill Haints will be releasing Welcome to the Midnight Opry (KLP236) Tuesday, October 4! Boy is this record a doozy - it’s their third full-length on K, and the Haints have never sounded better (and if you’ve been privileged to hear the Ghost Dance and/or To Win or To Lose, then you know we’re really saying something).

If your appetite needs whetting, here’s “Moon Shadow,” warm-hearted and lovelorn.

Like apple pie on the last day of summer: Kendl Winter’s “At the Same Time,” from her Dub Narcotic Disco Plate of the same name. This track was recorded by Calvin Johnson at the esteemed Dub Narcotic Studio, and the B-side gets the graceful remix treatment from Selector Dub Narcotic.

“At the Same Time” b/w “The Same Version” (DBN121) was released on June 7, 2011. This fine 7” is available from the wonderful folks over at the K Mail Order Dept.

Fred Thomas (Saturday Looks Good to Me, City Center) is in the Dub Narcotic Studio this week, helping put some finishing touches on a mysterious project with Calvin Johnson. Who knows what magic they are brewing down there? Who are all these talented musicans coming in and out of the studio? Who and what are these Hive Dwellers? We’ll find out sometime in 2012.

Speaking of City Center, the band (Thomas and collaborator Ryan Howard) put out the soundtrack to the summer, Redeemer (KLP231), this past May. Here’s “Modern Love,” one feisty rock jam.

The Maxines - Sweet Nothin's
[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]
240 plays

A mid-Monday dose of Little Medium Miss Dynamite: The Maxines blow it up with a cover of Brenda Lee’s classic “Sweet Nothin’s.”

Sultry punk rock? Why not, we say - we like it that way.

This song was recorded at Dub Narcotic Studio in Olympia, WA in May 2011. Other songs from this session will be featured on The Maxines’ upcoming Drugstore 7” EP (IPU140) on January 24, 2012. Need more medicine? Get your dose of the title track here. Watch your dosage, this stuff packs a wallop.

Tender Forever - The Road Was Unkind
[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]
110 plays

Melanie Valera and Christopher Doulgeris of Tender Forever spent many hours, months, nights and days this past spring working overtime to record their new EP Where Are We from [KLP237]. They divided their recording activity between our Dub Narcotic Studio here in Olympia, Washington, and Christopher’s Portland, Oregon studio known as The Den. The Where Are We from EP is about the journeys we take in life and how different paths can lead us to surprising places. Each song on the EP explores a different aspect of this idea - “The Road Was Unkind” was recorded entirely at Dub Narcotic. Melanie and Christopher both played a marimba-like instrument they found in the studio, a remnant of when Dub Narcotic was located in the same building as Musical Furnishings, an Olympia woodshop that builds marimbas into chairs, chests, tables.

If you need some winter soul fuel, mark your calendars: Where Are We From will be released on December 6, 2011. This EP is a succinct, beautiful beast and will keep you super toasty when you need it most.
