This afternoon we had a young Evergreen State College student named Julian come by to tour the offices, as he is doing research on K for a school project. I asked him for a recommendation for our song of the day today, and this was his pick. Thanks, Julian!
And speaking of Phil Elverum, have you checked out the new Distorted Cymbals single yet??
Anglepoise Cymbals! Selector Dub Narcotic’s (aka Calvin Johnson) remix of the new Mount Eerie track (<—a link to buy the 7”, hint hint). Man, I love me some good melodica playin’—it sure brings in the birds, if ya know what I’m sayin’.
To all you budding recordists out there: we recently re-discovered the Tape Op article about K’s own Dub Narcotic Studio, featuring in-depth interviews with Calvin Johnson and Phil Elverum. There’s some seriously awesome audio nerdage in here, so dig in… and bookmark the blog it’s posted on, because it’s run by DubNar studio manager/Evergreen audio teacher/all-around all-star Bob Schwenkler.
If you aren’t receiving Tape Op, then you’re missing out on the single best engineering and production magazine out there… and it’s free! Those Tape Op folks are class acts. Check it out.
This is the previously-unavailable music video for “Bass Drum Dream” by the Microphones. Feast your eyes and ears.
This video is one of many gems in Calvin Johnson’s VHS collection, which is currently in the midst of being digitized and uploaded to the Pink Elephant’s Graveyard on the new K website.
Filmed at Arrington’s “Little Arkansas” house on Fir Street in 1999 by Clarity Miller, the myth of Persephone and her pomegranate nightmare becomes a sinking ship of a submarine dance party in the realm of magic. The only video made for the “Uterus and Fire” album, features Olympia heavyweights Mirah, Anna Oxygen, Heather Dunn, and of course Kelly Coyle as Butoh Persephone.
D+ in their natural habitat. Bret, Karl, and Phil get “Rusted”.
Video by Clarity Miller, musical awesomeness by D+.
Here’s the Wednesday magic button: this is “Distorted Cymbals” by Mount Eerie. If you’ve been waiting for something to satiate your hungry soul, this be your tonic. Get hungry and let this song Phil you up.
“Distorted Cymbals” was recorded with Calvin Johnson in K’s very own Dub Narcotic Studio, and the B-side features a Selector Dub Narcotic remix entitled “Anglepoise Cymbals”. Put this date on your calendar: “Distorted Cymbals” b/w “Anglepoise Cymbals” (DBN122) hits the streets on February 7, 2012.
Phil Elverum (The Microphones, Mount Eerie) and Mirah getting ready to go on tour together in 1998 or so.
Please help spread the word on this very important benefit that will be taking place at Northern in Olympia on April 15th.
All proceeds go to support 7ep (http://www.7ep.net/) and victims of the March 11th earthquake in Northern Japan. ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
