Angelo Spencer did a remix of “The Hunch,” a song by the wondrous Maxines. He sent it over this morning, and it sounds otherwordly—transmitted from some martian station, intercepted by earth as a wonderfully stuttering mess. This is a true alien jammer.
DRUGSTORE EP - “Drugtore” - THE MAXINES
The Maxines are going to rock so hard at Barboza tonight! Go and bring your girlish/boyish good looks and show them a good time!
The Maxines - “Hang Around” from the Drugstore 7” EP.
Those raucous, rockin’ Maxines. Catch this song as well as a bunch of others (by Tender Forever, Ruby Fray, Mirah, and a bunch more) on a streaming digital comp exclusive to our newsletter this week. Sign up on the sidebar of our Tumblr page, our Facebook page, or on our K website!
The Maxines performing “Drugstore” at the release show they played at the Midnight Sun here in Olympia for their new “Drugstore” single. This is a great example of the Maxines’ unique brand blown-out buzzy garage pop, with both Matt and Kelly screaming over the messy cacophony of their instruments.
The picture on the left is the flyer made for the Maxines release show that’s happening tomorrow here in Olympia at the Midnight Sun, made by our own Sarah Cass. On the right is a picture of what someone did to one of the flyers downtown: They took the picture of Kelly’s face and put it on a flyer for Dr. Horrible. How lovely.
Kendl Winter’s new LP, The Mechanics of Hovering Flight, and The Maxines’ Drugstore 7” officially release today! Behold our celebration piece, delicious vegan Monkey Bread. (The Monkey Bread was made by our intern (and highly talented vegan baker) Katy Hampton). Three cheers to delicious folk & rock and roll!
The Maxines playing live at the Timberland Library here in Olympia (our library is the coolest, in case you couldn’t already tell). Playing the drum set along side Kelly is Matt’s six-year-old nephew, Charlie, who, I’ve gotta say, is pretty awesome. Check it out!
And don’t forget to clap!
The Maxines—-totally Amazing! This super-secret squirrel track “Honestly” is maybe my favorite of the year so far. We’re releasing their first K 7”, Drugstore, to the public at the end of the month, but you, special loved person that you are, can get it from our S H O P on Thursday.
There’s only a limited batch of pressings, so don’t miss out!
I WANNA WALK LIKE A MONKEY
Here’s the last Song of the Day for 2011… The Maxines rip yr face off with a cover of the Big Bopper’s “You Made a Monkey Out of Me”. This song was recorded during the same Dub Narcotic Studio session as three of the four songs on the upcoming Drugstore EP (IPU140), which will be released on January 24, 2012. If you wanna hear more, check out “Drugstore”, Brenda Lee cover “Sweet Nothings”, Planned Parenthood benefit track “Honestly”, and blistering instrumental “Our Earth Name”.
Oh, and curious about the original Bopper tune? Catch it here.
Here’s a special something: “Poppers”, the last song of the last set of the short-lived but glorious Olympia band Glow Tips, which featured a number of artists with K ties: guitarists Pat Scott-Walsh (Christmas, Boca a Boca) and Jake Goltiani (Herr Jazz, Brian Formo (K publicist from 2008-2010 and also proprietor of Endless Latino Records), drummer Spencer Carrow (Generifus, Hermit Thrushes, Sick Jumps), and bassist Nick Botka (Christopher Francis & Son, Legs the Crab). This killer-diller May 2010 show at the Mango House also featured sick sets from Christmas, The Maxines (one of their very first shows), legendary garage sloggers The Beets, and Terraform.
Oh my goodness, The Maxines were just on Nardwuar the Human Serviette’s radio show on WFMU! This mayhem took place last Friday - it’s a 7”-only special show, complete with discussion spouse-bashing, sailor punk, young drummers, and lots of excellent jams (courtesy of Matt Murillo’s dreamy collection of 45s).
This show is a doozy, listen here: http://wfmu.org/flashplayer.php?version=2&show=42703&archive=73549
Oh, and if you’re looking for the Veemo (vimeo) link mentioned in the show, it’s here: http://vimeo.com/28115953
